Tsinghua University sparks controversy for brand-named building

Flash

A teaching building at Beijing's Tsinghua University has ignited social debate after being named after a popular garment brand, Jeanswest. Although the name plaque has already been removed, the discussion goes on.

Tsinghua University celebrated its 100th anniversary, nearly one month ago, receiving donations and sponsorship from many commercial institutions. Up until the naming, the building was known by students as the "number four teaching building".

The University's new Jeanswest Building sparked debate about its legitimacy and moral correctness. Some people accuse Tsinghua of commercializing higher education, while others are calling for greater regulation of college sponsorship.
