Sister of Thaksin Shinawatra nominated as PM candidate

Flash

The sister of ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Yingluck Shinawatra, has been nominated as a candidate for the country's top post in the upcoming elections.

The development is likely to inflame tensions in the country's highly polarized political scene.

The 43-year-old would become Thailand's first female prime minister if the opposition "Pheu Thai Party" wins the July 3 election.

Surrounded by party heavy-weights, Yingluck said the party would put the events of the past behind and work for the good of the whole country. She also said her decision to run was hers alone and has nothing to do with her brother.

The political climate has been tense since Thaksin's ouster in 2006. Political rivals had accused him of corruption and showing disrespect toward the monarchy.
