High court upholds death verdict for Yao Jiaxin

THE Shaanxi Province Higher People's Court rejected the appeal of Yao Jiaxin, a 21-year-old music student against his death sentence given by the Xi'an Intermediate People's Court on April 22. A piano major at the Xi'an Conservatory of Music, Yao hit a woman with his car by accident one night last October in Xi'an, the provincial capital. Instead of helping the wounded victim, he cold-bloodedly killed her with a knife to eliminate the only witness. Yao filed an appeal to the higher court after he was sentenced to death and his family was ordered to pay 45,000 yuan (US$6,931) to the victim's family on April 22.
