Expert: China may adopt limit on emissions

China Daily newspaper says a senior researcher at Chinas Energy Research Institute, Xu Huaqing, says China is likely to agree to a quantified target to limit its greenhouse gas emissions after 2020.
But Xu says it depends on the outcome of climate change negotiations, and Chinas level of development by that time. This is the first time that China has mentioned a possible timetable regarding its emissions. China had previously pledged to cut carbon emissions by 40 to 45 percent per unit of economic growth, by 2020 from 2005 levels.
The expert also says China would need to spend more than 1 billion yuan or nearly 160 million US dollars, on energy conservation and developing renewable energy by 2020, to honor its commitment to reduce carbon intensity.
