Girl sued for using dead lover's card

A woman whose boyfriend was killed in a traffic accident has been hit with a lawsuit for withdrawing money from his bank account.

Chen Ling, who was living in Chongqing with Tan Bo when he died, took out 72,000 yuan (US$11,400) using his ATM card two days after the tragedy on Jan 27.

When Tan's mother, Zhang Yuanping, found out, she demanded the money be returned, saying it belonged to his family. However, Chen refused.

In court, Chen said she had deposited the money into Tan's account prior to his death, while Zhang presented evidence that suggested that is a lie. A verdict is pending.

Fang Lin at Chongqing Yuanqiao Law Firm advised couples living together to decide how their affairs should be handled in the event of a death, as the law does not protect cohabitants.
