Ethnic village teachers mistaken as swindlers by cops

SIX village teachers were assaulted by police as they were mistaken for a group of swindlers in Guangzhou, the capital of south China's Guangdong Province, the Chuncheng Evening News reported today.

The teachers, all ethnic minorities from the poverty-stricken Yulong County in southwestern Yunnan Province, came to Guangzhou for professional training, organized by the Ministry of Education.

As soon as they arrived in Guangzhou on November 14, they went shopping in Tianhe District, but when they were about to go back to their hotel at night, they were confronted by plainclothes police, the report said.

One of them fled and dialed 110 for help. The group leader, Zhang Kai, said four teachers were injured in scuffle with the plainclothes officers. "My head was pinned to the ground and I was kicked by someone in the back," he said.

The Yunnan Provincial Education Bureau and Yulong County government have intervened in the case and demanded compensation to the victims. The negotiation over compensation is still ongoing, the report said.
