Egypt Confirms Detaining Four Journalists
The Egyptian military confirmed on Tuesday that it had arrested four journalists in the restive city of Suez, according to media reports.
A video producer who formerly worked for Al Jazeera, Jason Mojica, and two of his employeesall based in the United Stateswere detained by Egyptian authorities while making a film for Vice magazines website, according to CNN.
Sherif Helwa, an Egyptian-American who was going to write for the piece produced by Mojica, was also arrested.
An official with the Egyptian armed forces, Lt. Col. Amr Imam, said the journalists were arrested by citizens who handed them over to the military intelligence in Suez, the news agency reported.
Mojica was carrying with him an old Al Jazeera card and claimed that he still worked there, Imam added.
Over the past several weeks, protesters have returned to Cairos Tahrir Square to demonstrate against the governments lackadaisical approach toward arresting former police officers who allegedly killed protesters in Februarys uprising. Riots and demonstrations have also occurred in the city of Suez.
