Driver arrested for crushing farmer with excavator
POLICE in east China's Jiangxi Province have arrested a driver who crushed a farmer to death with his excavator as the victim was trying to stop construction on his land, Nanfang Daily reported today. A Ganzhou City government spokesman said the driver You Jian would face homicide charges. You failed to stop the excavator when Xie ran up and rolled over him on July 11. Xie signed an agreement with Maodian Township authorities in 2009 on a 25,498-yuan (US$3,945) compensation for using his land. When he demanded additional money for the fish fry he grew in a pound, he got rejected. Hearing a company had started construction on his land, Xie rushed there to stop it and was killed. His death led to a protest of nearly 100 villagers. The township chief, Lin Shengfang, and another official in charge of construction, Huang Shumin, were sacked because of the incident, Nanfang Daily reported.
