HK airport sets new flight movements record

HONG KONG - Flight movements at the Hong Kong International Airport in March rose 15.5 percent year on year to a monthly high of 28,140. A new single-day record of 971 flight movements was also set on March 31, breaking the previous record made on April 20, 2008.The airport handled 4.2 million passengers and 369,000 tons of cargo during the month, up 1.8 percent and 6.2 percent, respectively. The growth in passenger traffic was mainly driven by Hong Kong resident travel, which increased 6 percent over the same period last year.Airport Authority Chief Executive Officer Stanley Hui said the strong increase in flight movements was attributable to airlines increasing flights on the back of the robust regional economy, while the moderate growth in passenger traffic reflected partly the immediate aftermath of the recent earthquake and nuclear crisis in Japan, which has led airlines to reduce flights to the country.
