China supports new rulers on UN bid

CHINA said it supports the Libyan rebel council's bid to represent its country in the United Nations. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu yesterday said that China was in favor of the National Transitional Council taking Libya's UN seat. Earlier this week, China formally recognized the transitional council as the ruling authority. China said it has been reassured by Libya's provisional authority that agreements made with China before Gadhafi was overthrown will be upheld. But Libya's provisional government said yesterday its foreign allies during the war would have priority for future deals with the country and warned that some existing contracts would be subject to review on corruption grounds. Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, chairman of the NTC, said existing contracts signed with the Gadhafi government would be reviewed for graft.
