Xinjiang security crackdown

Security forces are ready in the western region of Xinjiang since the launch of a two-month "strike hard" crackdown against violence and terrorism. The campaign began last week and will last through October 15 to ensure social stability during the first China-Euroasia Expo to be held early next month in Urumqi, capital of the autonomous region, and the coming National Day holiday. Specific security measures include around-the-clock patrols, identity checks and street searches of vehicles, according to a notice on the regional government's website. Authorities will deal with defendants more harshly, the notice said.
