Court hearing for 'Li Gang' accused

Chinese-born movie star Gong Li has again come under fire for wearing real fur. The star, who adopted Singaporean citizenship in 2008, was spotted wearing fur earlier this week at a movie promotion in Seoul. PETA, an international animal welfare organization, yesterday launched a campaign against the wearing of rabbit fur ahead of the Chinese Year of the Rabbit, which starts on February 3. The campaign focused on Gong, who has been known to wear rabbit fur in the past. Her manager Zeng Jingchao told Shanghai Daily yesterday that the clothes Gong was wearing at the Seoul event to promote her movie "Shanghai" were provided by sponsors. Zeng said they were not from rare animals but refused to comment further. "Gong Li has been assailed across China for her cruel and environmentally unfriendly choice of attire," PETA campaigner Coco Yu said yesterday. PETA said Gong had been a fur fan for a long time. Although the organization has contacted her several times about the wearing of real fur, it has yet to receive an official reply. "She'd never promised us that she would not wear fur again," said Maggie Chen, a PETA official. "Compared to Gong, some other stars show more love to animals. Denise Ho from Hong Kong replied to us as soon as we contacted her, and she has never worn fur from then on." Gong began her movie career in 1987, and her appearance in 1992's "The Story of Qiu Ju" gained her worldwide attention after she was named best actress at the Venice Film Festival. The actress was heavily criticized in 2007 when, as a Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference member, she submitted a proposal about environmental protection at the conference's annual session. She was accused of being hypocritical at the time for continuing to wear fur which critics said was both cruel and not environmentally friendly. PETA has long been trying to persuade stars to give up fur. Actress/singer Jennifer Lopez, model Naomi Campbell and soccer star David Beckham have all received PETA requests to give up wearing anima! l produc ts.
