Thanks to Zhu Haiping...I am now aware today 8th March 2011 is International Women's Day. This photo is a tribute to all the struggling working women around the world.
Photo of women in Chongqing. They were farmers from Wushan who had come into the city to collect scrap metal at the construction sites in the city. They told me they worked from 6am till 7pm digging with a hook-like stick looking for bits of metal that they could sell. They told me they weren't proud of what they were doing but they had no choice as their meagre earnings as farmers were not enough to feed their families. You can't tell from this photo but some of the women's hands were red and raw from cuts since most of them could not afford proper gloves and were using their bare hands to dig with the stick. They told me they earned 50 US cents or roughly 30 pence for a basket-full of scrap metal.
